Frequently asked questions

Can I work as a freelancer in Spain as an Australian?

Yes — two ways. If most of your clients are outside Spain, the Digital Nomad Visa is usually simpler. If you want Spanish clients or a local business, the self-employed permit is the route.

Is there a minimum investment for the self-employed visa?

There's no fixed amount. The investment must be enough for the business you describe, and the viability report confirms that.

How is this different from the entrepreneur visa?

The entrepreneur visa is for innovative, scalable start-ups assessed by ENISA. The self-employed permit suits everyday businesses — trades, shops, cafés and services.

I'm a tradie. Can I work in my trade in Spain?

Often yes, but some trades are regulated in Spain, so your Australian qualification may need to be recognised first. Check this early, as it can take time.

What happens after the first year?

If your business is active and you're paying social security, you can renew for a longer period. After 5 years, you can apply for long-term residence.
