Frequently asked questions

Can I get a job in Spain as an Australian?

Yes, with a work permit sponsored by a Spanish employer. It's easiest for roles on the shortage occupations list, or for skilled jobs that qualify for the highly qualified professional route.

What is Spain's shortage occupations list?

Spain regularly publishes a list of hard-to-fill jobs. If your role is on it, your employer doesn't need to advertise locally first, which saves several weeks.

Is this the same as the highly qualified professional visa?

No. Highly qualified roles above a salary threshold use a faster route under the Startup Law. This work permit covers other jobs.

Can my partner and children come with me?

Usually yes, through family reunification once you meet the requirements. If your job qualifies as highly qualified, your family can apply at the same time as you.

How long does a Spanish work permit take?

Usually 2 to 4 months in total, depending on whether the job needs advertising, the province and the consulate. Don't start work until you have the written approval.
